back to the same old saturdays..

it's back to orchestra practice.. =) no more lazing around at home on saturdays.. although i don't really treat practices that seriously, i still enjoy hanging out with a crazy bunch of friends, whom every now and then you can discover something new about them.. haha..

and these people have been quite supportive towards my philippino trips, i must say.. haha.. especially with the one last december.. i've managed to gather quite a lot of stuff from them, and of course they show their support by not deterring me from going.. haha.. =) that, i really appreciate it a lot..

and of course, i get to travel to switzerland with these people, and it was really fun.. =) i bet my parents won't let me go, if not for the excuse of having to perform.. oops.. haha..

even though there were moments when i was down in the orchestra, somehow i'm still in there now.. haha.. i do need a space to rant on unhappy things happening in the orchestra at times, yeah? haha.. the recent harp incident has been quite an issue, and as an half-pail-water-harpist, i can't help but feel a bit helpless when it comes to providing solutions for the problem.. even though it's not anyone's fault, and nobody wish that to happen either, but still.. sigh..

copying scores for the orchestra isn't any easy job at all.. besides the low pay for a laborious and brain-cells-killing job, it is stressful too, especially when the orchestra starts to find mistakes in your work, and finds it hard to comprehend or when the mistakes get too bad.. worse, if you are sitting there listening to people pointing out all the mistakes.. =(

but laughter keeps one going, which perhaps explains why i'm still in there.. haha.. yesterday's barberque was fun.. although my 'twin' helen wasn't there and i was a bit lonely at times, but it was still enjoyable lar, with other people around.. food was good, with vodka too.. *i'm not an alcoholic!!* haha.. and we ended up playing lame and stoopid games till 1+ am.. haha.. now at least i know i not stoopid.. haha..

now i have to seriously consider whether to take up private harp lessons with Ma Lao Shi.. time is not so much of the issue here.. it's (again) money.. it's always expected that private lessons would be expensive.. and i couldn't possibly ask my mum to pay for it, besides, it is my interest, and my parents have been paying for all my music courses for almost 10 years.. the money i've been earning are for other purposes too, like my end-of-year mission.. haha..

*pouts* i can't think any more..

slacker is happy..

whee~~ tricia and family and friends received the things i sent over!! yeah!! thanks to zhaoyuan, who helped me pass the stuff over to them.. =) though she won't get to read this anyway.. haha.. very happy lar, they got to see the pictures, and read the letters i wrote.. i think it was quite mushy, the way i wrote.. haha.. kept mentioning "thank you"s in all the letters.. haha.. but it's all from my heart.. =) was grinning to myself all the way, when nina texted me this morning that she received the stuff.. she said everyone had a good laugh looking at the pictures.. haha.. awwww.. i couldn't get to see their reactions manz.. would miss out all the fun.. oh well, like i always say, I'LL BE BACK!! hehe.. hope the mondia's family would have received my letter and photos by now.. =) oh.. thanks tricia!! =)

anyway, i've been slacking at home since my last paper.. not that i'm not finding a job k.. just that i emailed the companies, and yet no replies.. now left with 2 months how to find a job.. i still want some extra cash for my end-of-year mission, and hopefully a shopping spree with giftsy my thai friend in bangkok this coming end-july wor.. if not a MP3 player would be nice, too.. haha..

so what have i been doing? other than teaching tuition (which only constitutes to 5 hours a week) i have been watching philippino shows and listening to pinoy songs all the while.. haha.. can predict that lar har? haha.. think i spend more time in front of my computer watching the shows compared to watching tv.. hahha.. they have new drama coming up!! whee~! haha.. now's a good time for me to master my tagalog.. haha..

some interesting facts..

some interesting facts about left-handedness.. look out, lefties.. haha..

1. Most cases of left-handedness are thought to be caused by minor brain damage before or during birth. Many scientists believe the damage is due to reduced oxygen supply before birth.

2. 65% of those suffering from autism are left-handed. Left-handedness is more common than usual among the world's artists and the world's gays.

3. Left-handers have shorter life spans. This is because, in an admittedly right-handed world, left-handers have more accidents, some of which are fatal.

---------------

and i realise, it's theoretically possible to transfer memories from one person to another - by injection.

"In a number of successful laboratory experiments beginning some 40 years ago, so called 'memory molecules' have been successfully transferred via injection from one organism to another. Although the experiments so far have only involved simple life forms, the implications for human learning are immense."

imagine acquiring the works of amazing people like Einstein, Shakespeare, or even from the huge pile of study notes, not through painstaking study but from a hypodermic syringe.. how shiok is that.. wahaha..

i still haven't finish writing all the letters to my friends in Bago.. *pouts*

different..

yar, it was nice to meet up with friends whom i have not seen for quite some time, but everytime when i see how well they are doing, i can't help but to compare myself with them.. yesterday's birthday party struck me kinda hard, that i'm still in a daze.. until now..

people are going away for internships and exchange programs.. to Neatherlands, Denmark, the States.. people are going away, or are already there for their courses, Australia, London, Boston.. i cannot compare with them, because i'm different.. i'm not born rich, i don't have 10K to go for exchange programs, i don't have a million to go overseas to study..

because i'm different..

people are doing well in their studies, having internships and attachments and are doing well.. i cannot compare with them, because i'm different.. i chose a different path, to enter into science when most of my friends are in business or accountancy.. when i now realise that i don't have that enough passion to keep me going on..

because i'm different..

people are looking good, mature, pretty, slim whatever.. i cannot compare with them, because i'm different.. i don't have a good body to start with, i enjoy eating and i'm not disciplined to keep myself to a diet.. i have a natural chubby face and baby fats.. i like to sit cross-legged with my legs on the chairs, and i can sit anywhere on the floor when i'm not wearing skirts.. i don't deny that i'm very "chor-lor" because i cannot restrict myself to be so girly.. i sometimes speak loudly because that's the way i am.. my hair is forever unkempt and frizzy, because i'm born with it.. because i'm not born rich to do frequent treatments.. because i'm not born rich to buy myself pretty clothes and shoes and bags..

because i'm different..

but i'm true to myself.. i don't act girly, i accept my baby fats as my characteristic.. i know i'm not rich, so i will never understand how some people can have the entire wardrobe of pretty and branded stuff and still think that they are not enough.. i'm not born rich, i don't live in condos or landed properties.. i never had a discman, and i don't have a mp3 player, a laptop.. i know i'm not studious and so be it.. i find other things that can keep me going..

because i'm different..

i know people can never understand why i'm so passionate about going back to philippines and learning the language, so be it.. don't tell me how dangerous, how backward it is, i know that.. but do you know the pleasure and the sense of satisfaction when you see the smiles on the children's faces? do you know how good it feels when you have become part of the people's lives, part of their families?

because i'm different.. because that's the way i am.. and i shall be contented with what i have.. because true happiness cannot be measured with what you have..

injured elbow..

i am one injured soldier going to walk into a battlefield with only one arm..

my elbow hurts so much that i had to go and see a doc.. i can't even bend it.. with some rubbing and cracking and my first-time acupuncture, now it's slightly better, but i don't dare to overexert it..

i don't mind spraining my ankle or hurting my legs *choy!* but having an injured arm is definitely much more troublesome.. everything i do i have to take double the time.. simple things like wearing my shirts or feeding myself i can't even do it as swiftly as i used to.. now how i wish i'm a left-hander..

how to write exam essays with my arm like that.. arghh.. can i bring in a laptop to the exam hall and type it out instead???

exams coming..

my mum will know that my exams are coming when:

1. i stay at home most of the time, other than going out to teach tuition
2. i start having irregular sleeping hours
3. i start to ransack the kitchen for my midnight snacks
4. i keep telling her to buy more biscuits, cereals, milk etc.

life is boring.. study for exams is boring.. grr..

sleepless night..

this was taken this morning at freaking 6+ am.. the sun was just about to rise to shine on all the butts of sleepy pigs.. haha.. took this while i was cooking my tasteless maggi mee.. apparently i didn't catch a wink for the whole night, and there was utterly nothing for me to eat.. no bread, no biscuits, no milk for my cornflakes.. arghh.. i had a scoop of peanut butter though, but of course that was not enough, and i don't want to get gastric pains before a test..

but in the end, i couldn't hold out, and fell asleep at 8+ am, only to wake up at 1+ pm.. and of course, i didn't finish studying.. haha.. aiya, 32 MCQs, tikam power lar..

but then the questions were damn hard manz.. and that prof chang, most of his questions were "choose the incorrect sentence" type.. yucks.. 5 choices leh, how to choose.. you are making things difficult manz..

very tired, but so many things to do.. i don't have many "yuhui"s to share the burden you know..

thoughts..

Oprah Winfrey has the ability to throw big christmas parties for the children affected by AIDS in South Africa, give them toys, clothes, school uniforms and school supplies.. letting these kids have their most wonderful christmas ever.. she gives thousands of children hope and brings out the radiant smiles in them.. her private charity organisation Angel Network has raised millions of dollars to help poor and vulnerable children in many areas around the world..

Jon Bon Jovi has the ability to build a playground for Northern Home For Children in Philadelphia, $300 for each of the children in the home for new school clothes, a backpack filled with school supplies and computers for the home.. he donates $1 million to Oprah's Angel Network to help in providing needs to children that need it most..

what's my ability?

------------------------------

serious thought aside, i think i'm turning into an alien soon.. sleeping at 5am every night, only to get 3 hours of sleep (exception of 9 hours on non-school days) and have to depend of at least 2 cans/cups of coffee for survival..

look at what school is doing to me..

curry flavour..

a nice and filling dinner at Curry Flavour at Stamford House tonight.. haha.. instead of eating cheese and chocolate fondue at Swiss Culture again, me, aline, waipeng and huijie had a change of taste and chose to eat Curry Flavour instead..

don't be mistaken, this is not an indian restaurant (i already had enough of indian music) but a japanese restaurant.. ambience is good, with nice comfy chairs.. price is alright, average person will probably spend $15 to $20.. food is great, and filling too..

i ordered soft shell crab with curry, and this was what i got..
.
.
.
.
.

what the hell?? two real-size crabs in front of me manz.. best lar!! haha.. usually most people would cut the crabs into smaller pieces for easier consumption.. but this Curry Flavour serves the crabs just like that!! cool manz.. with all the crab eggs inside.. yum.. haha..

see? i can still play with the crabs' hands and legs.. or whatever you call them.. haha..

and when u pour the curry onto your plate, it looks appetizing.. and really taste marvellous..

tempting?? drooling?? haha..

yar.. besides the food, the ambience was really great.. a good chill-out place with a good bunch of friends.. these great pals of mine have been with me through my ups and downs.. one of the few closest friends whom we still meet up almost every month.. =) well i suppose they know me better, since we were together on a foreign (now no more) land for almost a month.. haha..

yup.. congrats to our little-tiger-princess-sarah-huijie.. she's going london for her foundation course on arts.. design if i'm not wrong.. i know it will be hard, financially and mentally, being away from family and friends in a faraway land.. but this is your dream, pursue it!! =) i know you can do it.. you have been through so many camps, surely you must have picked up some survival skills by now.. haha.. yar but anyway, do cherish this rare opportunity and strive hard to achieve the scholarship.. jia you and we are all behind you.. =)

RiverMaya rocks!

whee~~!! i'm super high manz!! RiverMaya rocks!! woohoo~~!! haha.. a philippino-day for me manz.. haha..

was looking forward to watching RiverMaya's performance.. i was told that they are one of the best few philippino bands.. was finding kakis to go with me.. so i managed to grab aline.. haha.. when we were there, there were quite a lot of people waiting there already.. you see, it was an outdoor performance at esplanade, so it's kinda first-come-first-serve basis.. we couldn't get a good standing place, but i could still at least get to see their little heads lar.. haha.. but all around me were philippinos.. haha.. i was kinda back to philippines for a few moments.. haha..

but when RiverMaya started performing.. they rocked the place manz!! they sang in english and in tagalog.. which got the crowd hyped up.. =) really enjoyed their performance manz.. haha..

their first performance was only about half-hour long.. not enough.. haha.. but aline had to go for her gym.. so i went suntec with her, and did my own shopping.. and ended up buying a dress for $15.. haha originally it was $49 you know.. haha..

RiverMaya's next performance was actually at 10pm.. but aline and waipeng were tired.. so we just sat down at CoffeeBeans for a drink, before leaving..

so on the way to the mrt, i was thinking, "why not i walk pass esplanade again, see if they are still performing".. the impulsive me walked to the open space with the big stage, to find myself being drowned in a sea of philippinos.. haha.. but i was late, and they finished their performance.. then i saw my cousin with his friend there.. haha.. what a coincidence.. the crowd was waiting for their autograph session, so my cousin went to buy two of their cds so that we could have a closer contact with them.. haha..

so... ...

a close-up shot with the band's vocalist/keyboardist Rico Blanco!! whee~!! =P

and of course, the autographed cds.. =)

too bad the cds belong to my cousin.. sheesh..

oh oh.. and i received a letter from my (or rather, our) adopted child!!! whee~~!! so happy.. haha.. and oh yar, thanks to aline for the cute nice test-tube with my name in it.. =) i like the colour.. =)

and i'm going to continue watching my philippino movie Don't Give Up On Us.. hehe.. finally with english subtitles.. yeah..

me and my philippino drama..

go ahead and say that i'm mad or crazy.. but i can't help it if i'm addicted to philippino dramas.. =P wahaha.. there are 2 dramas that i do catch them whenever i'm at home.. all thanks to TV2 and TV3.. haha.. they don't even bother dubbing them, so i can listen to Tagalog while i watch the dramas, though most probably i won't understand.. haha..

but hey, i managed to learn some new words from there k?? haha.. simple words of course, i can't catch what they are speaking and they tend to speak like a machine gun.. haha.. and of course my little Filipino language book comes in handy.. but there are still words that i can't find in the book lar.. i want a Tagalog-English dictionary!!

and so the crazy me went to do some searching online, and found the tv station's webbie and *woohoo~* i can watch the current shows and dramas and movies!! movies with english subtitles!! yeah!! haha.. i wanted to watch "Don't Give Up On Us" when i was still in Bago, but too bad the movie in the theatres has no english subtitles.. but now i can watch it!! yeah!!!

but my current hit is still the drama "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas".. haha.. got handsome hunk leh.. haha.. but the handsome hunk is married to the pretty babe in the show too.. both reel-life and real-life.. *sobz*.. haha.. kidding..

this is the handsome hunk Diether and pretty babe Kristine.. gwapo and gwapa leh.. haha..

contracts..

haha.. even kids have to sign contracts.. and then you will wonder what is the content.. =P

that's the 'contract' my little cousin had to sign.. (translated for my international friends: i will do my homework seriously from tomorrow onwards.)

well, i suppose different parents have different methods of disciplining kids.. and my aunt and my parents belong to the same type.. haa..

meanwhile, i think my life is getting a bit haywired.. have no idea what am i doing.. tuition, copying music scores, but not studying.. need to knock some sense into myself.. arghh..

anyway, need you guys to help me do a simple survey.. click on this link.. thanks thanks.. =)

no more indie songs..

phew.. yeah finally it's all over.. no more indie songs, no more weird tempo.. end of torturous practices for the moment..

shall not rant on the bad things of this concert, if not it would be endless.. but one thing i'm utterly sad and worried about, the harp fell onto the ground once! my god.. the harp leh!! such a big and expensive instrument, and it doesn't belong to the orchestra somemore.. oh manz.. it's ok if it went off-tune, because it could be tuned back.. but there was a crack!! arhh!! A CRACK!! how?!? i had no idea how the harp fell, and whose fault, but i don't think anyone would wish that to happen.. i'm going to cry if they demand compensation (which i think there's a high possibility).. *sobz*

ok.. enough..

i guess we know how to entertain ourselves, instead of worrying how bad our skills are.. gossiping about people, discussing the fanciful clothes and hair and the super-high heels of Mao Hui Ru.. haha.. and taking pictures.. =)

and first time styling my hair for the concert, to suit the new bright-red costume.. people say i looked cute.. i think so too.. muahaha.. =P

pictures pictures!! =) (haha.. nonoy's favourite phrase too.. haha)

before the hair change..

after the styling..

with flowers from Li Hai Lang lao shi.. =)

with Seetoh lao shi.. he said i look nice.. but like a bride.. boo..

with Li Hai Lang lao shi.. he's a real cute guy.. haha..

the heavenly-Subramaniam.. he has his aura.. i hope i won't see him in my dreams again.. haa..

the *ahem* 'pretty' Mao Hui Ru..

well, it was really a big pleasure to be able to work with all these wonderful musicians, which i consider it to be a real rare opportunity.. actually the fusion of indian music with chinese instruments actually sound quite nice.. the indian-ish rhythms can actually make you shake your head like an indian.. haha.. just that the music sounds more like chromatic scales to me, and i don't think i would want to play that again in the near future.. haha.. and listening to Subramaniam playing his 5-string violin (yes, i must emphasize this.. ) together with his 2 other percussionists really put us in no position for comparison.. haiz.. seeing Zhu Lin playing this tough music on erhu is also another 'wah~' moment..

but anyway, it's all over, time for a break.. and right now.. time to sleep.. *yawnzz*

Friday, February 24, 2006

haunted..

arghh!! i can't study for my test which is 14 hours away from now.. the indie songs are haunting me!!

this week is going to leave me no space for breathing.. wah!! i need more time!! i haven't study much for the test.. so i'm going to leave it to my tikam power to pull me through.. damn..

and did i mention before that i dreamt of the-heavenly-Subramaniam a few nights ago?! eerie!! it freaked me out and left me in a daze for a few moments.. worse, he was speaking Chinese in my dream.. hmm.. i think we should be more careful with him around huh..

practices these few days were torturing.. ending late at night and everyone would be in a state of mental shock after the practices..

and the 3rd movement of the concerto was at a freaking-hell tempo of 180.. and i'm giving up.. *raises white flag*

arghh!! i can't get the indie melody out of my head!! i can't get all the scientific terms into my head!! i'm dead.. no sleep tonight..

where is my coffee?

eve of v-day doom..

valentine is such a commerialised thing.. all the flowers and the chocolates are coming in big bombs.. a bouquet of dozen roses cost freaking hell more than 200 bucks! hello? give me the money i can go away for a short holiday, or that could pay for my domestic flights in philippines.. haha.. and why roses? there are other pretty flowers out there too.. like lilies, tulips.. so why roses? haha..

i don't mind the chocolates though.. haha.. i will melt in front of you if i'm treated to a chocolate buffet.. haha..

but anyway, the whole school is full of lovey-hearty stuff, everywhere is v-day bazaars.. eek.. i think tomorrow will be worse.. -_-'''

and i have absolutely no idea why there is weird uncle doing some astrology-palm-reading thingie in the middle of the v-day bazaar in science fac!! -_-'''

but then again, v-day is not exclusively for those lovey-dovey couples k.. haha.. i love my friends too! haha.. hugs and kisses to all my friends here, in Bago and anywhere else in the world.. *muacks* =P

all the singles in the world unite!

one month..

january 12 - the day i left Bago..

1 month back from Bago.. and i actually missed out on quite a number of things within this 1 month.. tricia's birthday, papa's birthday, nina's birthday, and today, the pre-celebration for the Babaylan festival..

sigh..

i was imagining, that i was part of the crowd, watching the parade, perhaps trying to spot some familar faces, and going "ooh~ and ahh~" all over.. i could joking around and having fun with all my precious friends in Bago..

yes, i admit that i can't lift myself out from this illusion.. people say i cling too much to the life and things in Bago.. i don't deny that..

oh well, just leave me in my own delusion..

Sunday, February 05, 2006

happy and sad day..

now this is what i call a new year celebration.. going from house to house, eating new year goodies (my hae bi hiam aka shrimp rolls!! =P), playing games and had hearty laughs.. =)

1st stop, Mr Lum's house.. had to wake up early, because i had to travel all the way from the west of the island to Serangoon.. -_-''' luckily there was helen, if not i would most probably get bored or fall asleep throughout the journey.. haha.. yar, food food and more food.. =)

2nd stop, Kevin's house for our steamboat lunch.. hehe.. my 3rd steamboat for the new year so far..

3rd stop, Huiyan's house.. and it was playing time! haha.. i don't know how to play (and don't wish to learn how to play) mahjong, so i went playing cards with some of the peeps in her room.. i started from being the "asshole" of the "asshole dai di" to the "president" in the final round.. haha.. yeah.. =P

last stop, Andrew's house.. manz his house was huge.. i was like, "wow~" before stepping in the house.. haha.. had dinner there and we lao-ed yu sheng.. =)

another round of hearty laughs playing "indian poker".. haha..

a fun day, but my mood went kinda down when reading the newspaper.. was following up with the stampede incident in Manila, and i was sad to read that the death toll went up, and there were nearly 400 people injured in this stampede.. *sigh* mixed feelings i was having, angry at the poor organisation of the event, pity the families that are already shattered and in grief..

i don't know about what other people may think.. but i've been there, i've watched Wowowee, and i've seen how bad the living conditions are for the philippinos, and how desperately these people want to win the prizes during the show..

"We were just coming to have a good time with the family," the son said. In between sobs, the father said that the family had come with the hope of winning one of the cash prizes to better their lives. "We are poor people and now I have lost my wife," he said. Like him, many others were hoping to win minibuses or houses or even the top prize of one million pesos (S$31,500), a special offering for the show's one year anniversary. Around 40 per cent of the people in Philippines live on US$2 (S$3.25) a day.

putting sad note aside, i've sent out a letter to our sponsored child, together with 2 story books, an exercise book, and a few stickers.. an appeal to any NUSCO people who read this, do give your support towards this sponsorship.. it's only $5 a month.. perhaps now there's only this kid gets to benefit, but with more people, we can reach out to one more child, or even more..

i just wish to touch the hearts of more people that may need the help..

what a new year..

this chinese new year is no chinese new year to me.. i can't believe that i'm alone at home on the 2nd day of the new year.. it's now only me and the computer and the tv..

woke up to see my parents not around, and brother went to work earlier on.. watched tv until i fell asleep.. besides there wasn't much of any interesting shows going on anyway.. other than discovering that there was a philippino drama going on TV3 the malaysian channel..

played online games until i'm sick of it.. oh man.. this is not new year..

and i can't believe that i had to call for macdonalds delivery for my late lunch and afternoon tea.. on new year!! what the... arghh..

maybe the next few new years i should go away for a holiday.. then i won't need to worry about buying any new year clothes and having to tackle questions coming from relatives.. not bad an idea huh..

update: happened to watch a documentary on Channel Newsasia, about a philippino maid who set up a small welfare organisation that helps needy children in philippines.. the crew went to Iloilo with her, and saw her family, the library that she set up, and the children that she has helped.. all these brought back memories that i had when i was in Bago.. sigh..

seeing the things that she did, it somehow made me want to do more.. but the most touching part of the show, was when her children said that they didn't miss her that much.. perhaps that's the agony of a philippino maid who has to work overseas to earn money, to support her family back in hometown.. sigh sigh sigh..

another call to philippines..

manz.. another call to Bago city makes my day.. =)

a call to ryan and joseph, who were there with the dancers and musicians practising for the Babaylan Festival that is coming in february.. princess sarah was with me on the phone.. =) and it was really heartwarming talking to them on the phone.. yar, again, how i wish i'm right there with them now.. i used to watch them dancing and playing music almost every night.. i looked forward to walking out of the house to the central plaza, to the community centre where they train.. i looked forward to seeing ryan, joseph and temogen there every night..

i really miss them alot.. =(

today's dinner was nice and full of laughter.. there will be no lack of laughter with huijie and ryan around.. haha.. menu of the day? CHEESE FONDUE AND CHOCOLATE FONDUE!!

there's a new addition to the gang.. ryan's girlfriend.. haha.. it turned out to be "scenario X", whom she turns out to my ex-schoolmate, but i don't really know her.. haha..

had a real hearty time eating and laughing.. =)

i continued playing "santa claus", passing presents to people.. today was to ryan and huijie.. and huijie was so happy to see those presents and the graham biscuits and the recipe for the ice-box cake.. haha..

shopping for new year clothes was unsuccessful.. hmm... maybe i'll need another last minute shopping..
