And so, it's May already. I am always lamenting that time flies too fast, but on the other hand, I'm quite an expert at procrastinating too. Haha.
The past month had been quite exciting. The most memorable thing would be the korean pop band group CNBLUE's concert here in Singapore. It was my first time watching a korean pop concert live. It seemed like I was being transported back to my teenage days, screaming like any fangirl and waving lightstick throughout the concert. But I must say that I really enjoyed it a lot, and it was a fabulous concert put up by CNBLUE. I am proud to say that I'm a CNBLUE fan. :D
Because of work, I attended the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation for Chinese Orchestras for 4 days. Besides the fact that I had to listen the same set pieces for over 60 orchestras, I do felt that the performing standards of school orchestras nowadays have improved tremendously, compared to the days while I was still a student (i.e. more than 10 years ago). There have been debates over the restructuring of the grading system and the unexpected result outcome this year, but in my humble opinion, the essence of the competition is to push the participants beyond their limits, rather than being too obsessed with results. The restructured grading system does not do justice to the participants and the instructors, neither does it truly define the purpose of the so-called 'presentation'.
On a lighter note, things had been going nicely for the past month. There had been quite a number of meet-ups with old friends and ex-colleagues. I admit that I don't really take the initiative in organising meet-ups, so I am grateful for my other friends for doing so. Haha.
And there is a tulip-mania going on this month at the Gardens By The Bay, so I had to say hi to my favourite flowers. :) Ending this post with some photos of the beautiful tulips. :)

Happy 40th birthday, NUSCO!
NUS Chinese Orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary last Friday, 29 March 2013, at Singapore Conference Hall, putting up its annual concert, titled 'Reminiscence
It was kinda amazing, to think that I've been part of this orchestra for a decade. The journey started in 2002, when I joined in as a guest player, while I was still a JC student. It was a real great deal to me then, because it was a different experience performing with a more mature orchestra compared to the usual school orchestras. The repertoires were of course, more challenging, but I always find them exciting. I enjoy being part of the progression from figuring the pieces from scratch to the orchestra coming together seamlessly performing a full length piece.
My last concert as a performer was in 2009, thereafter I switched to working backstage as a photographer. Things change, at times I still do miss playing the Erhu, but I am not sure if I would pick it up again and re-join as a performer. Perhaps I need more motivation to do so. Heh.
Nonetheless, every concert we have put up are memorable, even more so for the two overseas trips to Switzerland and Poland. I guess I won't trade in anything for the experiences I've gained from the orchestra.
Over these 10 years, I've got to know many wonderful seniors, my batch mates, and then the juniors. The graduates who are not so active in the orchestra now have evolved to be part of FSC - Friday Supper Club. The irony is, our gatherings are not always on a Friday, and yes there's always food in our gatherings, but not necessarily over supper. Haha. Our gatherings are always filled with laughter, especially when we bring up the hilarious past. These awesome friends are important to me, I guess I won't be who I am without them.
Thank you, NUSCO, for the wonderful memories. :)

It's March already!
Hi there!
Didn't realise that the last post was on last Christmas. Time flies, doesn't it?
So, what have I been up to lately? I did go back to the Philippines, to give a birthday surprise to the celebrants, Tricia and Papa Momoy. I must say it was a well-planned surprise, because nobody knew that I was coming, except for the 3 ladies in the house. :)
And coincidentally, just a ferry ride away, Ilo-ilo was celebrating its Dinagyang Festival. In conjunction with that, ASAP (a Filipino music-and-dance programme) was doing a live show there. Knowing that many of the good-looking faces would be there, well, more importantly, my Papa Piolo (!!), I went there and joined in the Dinagyang fiesta mood. Very much thanks to the relatives in Ilo-ilo, I've got a chance to witness the colourful Dinagyang Festival parade from the VIP area of the Freedom Grandstand. Not only that, a free ticket to the ASAP show bundled with police escorts. Haha!
And! Piolo was also holding his album mall tour there as well, do you think I would let go of that? :) The purchase of his latest album included an upclose blocked seating area, an autograph and a photo taken with him. Ah.. that was almost like a dream come true. Haha.
I guess that was really the highlight of the entire trip. :)
And then came the Chinese New Year. It wasn't a big affair for the family, most of the time was spent in the house. I was just plain unlucky to get gastric flu on the eve of the new year, I lost track how many times I had vomitted, and many of the new year goodies were out of limits. It was only till Day 3 that I could stomach some solid food and a small piece of my favourite bak-kwa and shrimp roll.
Before the trip to the Philippines, I had an ear infection, and I was panicking, worried that I couldn't take the plane. Thankfully it got better, and I had medications along the way. And then it came back just a few weeks back, thank god it was a mild one. I guess this year's wish should just be good health.
Other than that, I've been stuck at work, caught up in the aftermath of taking too many photos (it was a real headache to sieve through and edit hundreds of photos), meeting friends for meals, attending performances here and there.. Life still goes on the usual way.
And then what's up coming next? More performances (and photo-taking assignments), work, work, work.. Haha. Till then!

Merry Christmas!
Hello there again! Another long awaited post huh..
The 2-week long 'battle' was kinda an eventful one, as predicted. As much as I would love to rant, I still need to keep things confidential (and to protect my ass too). I just hope people realise that the examination is not something they can have it their own way anyhow.
I managed to squeeze in a short respite in Bangkok right after the 'battle'. Good to meet up with my Thai friends again. It has been 12 long years. :) I miss the (budget) shopping at Chatuchak market and Terminal 21 shopping mall. Love the cheap but awesome traditional Thai massage as well.
I guess the most unique experience was the chat with 2 local tour guides while having a cuppa coffee opposite the Grand Palace. They turned out to be Chinese-Thais who came from my father's hometown, Betong (South Thailand). A pity that I did not take a photo with them, perhaps my father might have known them.
And right after that I was back into the whirlwind of work again. But I guess the Christmas mood helped to relieve the stress a little. Been meeting with friends here and there as well, a good time reminiscing the past, a good time for laughter. :)
If time and money is not an issue, I would have flown to the Philippines to spend Christmas there. I still miss spending Christmas there. The entire atmosphere and mood is so different from here, too commercialised, sadly. Hopefully there will be another time I could spend Christmas there, and I definitely look forward to that.
But anyways, a very Merry Christmas to all, and to all my Pinoy friends in Bago City, Manila, here in Singapore, and in other parts of the world, Maligayang Pasko!
Hohoho!

Happy 27th!
Without me realising, my birthday went past *shoo~!* just like that.
The past year has been good, not without the usual ups and downs, but thankfully there were no major crisis to wreck my life. Haha.
Grateful to have friends who have been there when I need them to, and I hope I've done the same for them. :) A high school senior once shared this meaningful quote with me, 'To be rich in friends, is to be poor in nothing'. Indeed.
Thank you, my close friends in NUSCO, who made me a new plush toy, a new friend for Mr Tofu. And we named him, Mr Yong Tofu. HAHA. (By the way, Mr Tofu is already 5 years old!) And of course, to all who have greeted me. I love ya all. Muacks. HAHA.
I don't have any grand birthday wishes, I'm just hoping that it will be a smooth-sailing year. Hmm, or maybe a Piolo coming into my life? HAHA. That's really a wishful thinking.

I need a break
It has been an exhausting week. Stress level is up, sleepless nights are back. I have been trying my best, but there were still mistakes. And due to the nature of my work, there are too many pairs of eyes watching me, which add on to my stress level, and perhaps contribute a little to my depression. People might think too highly of me, but a superman I am not.
Sometimes, I have the thought of giving up. I'm entertaining that thought again tonight.
To be honest, I'm still lost. I still do not have a clear direction in life. With many of my friends moving towards their goals in life, I think I have been unprepared all along, and have thus failed in this aspect.
Yet somehow, my work (I don't call it a career) is not the main factor that defines who I am. Rather, it is my doings in the Philippines. I have no idea how to make that my career, but I hope it is not impossible to do so.
But for now, a good sleep is perhaps the best way to get rid of any negative thoughts, even if it might be temporary.

Back from hiatus
Apologies for going on an unexpectedly long hiatus. I had to change the hard disk of my laptop and hence all the photo-editing was delayed. And surprisingly, I could survive without a laptop for 2 months, and still connect to the world via work computer and iPhone. Ha. I just increased my TV-watching hours unknowingly, that's all.

Anyways, to share what I've been up to recently, I went to the Philippines twice in 2 months. Call me an addict, but that's what I like. The first trip was to bring a friend there to conduct music lessons for the children in Bago City.

It was a 2-week teaching course, but I could only be there for a week. Nevertheless, it was still an enjoyable experience with the children, seeing them getting excited when they were learning new things.

The second trip was to Manila, just for a weekend. I had friends who were there for a working trip, and so I joined them for a weekend before flying back to Singapore together. It was a shopping trip, and to meet up with my friends in Manila as well. Despite the short duration, I managed to gain new experience - taking the jeepney without local's help. Haha.
And now after all the travelling, it's back to the hectic life once again. I foresee that I'll spend much more time at work for the coming months, but hopefully I could get a short break once the project ends. But meanwhile I could try to escape away from the reality by watching (more) TV. HAHA.

Laptop on Strike
Announcement: This blog is on a short hiatus because the writer's laptop had betrayed her and went on a 'hanging' spree. Will continue from the trip to Bago City in June, when the laptop returns after repairs. Probably I would have returned from my Manila trip in July by then. Haa.
(P.S. Typing this on the phone is just too troublesome.)

It's May already!
Long time no see. Haha.
As usual, I've been busy with work since I came back from the Philippines in April. The new project is making me not able to multi-task as efficiently as I would like myself to be. And I'm not even halfway through completing it. Sigh.
It was good to meet up with old friends, gossipping and reminiscing of the good old times. Been hearing wedding bells ringing, and they will keep on ringing for the coming years. It's 'the' phase of life. My Facebook wall will then be flooded with wedding photos, and then soon, baby photos. Haha.
Not quite sure how often would I write on this blog again, I still love penning down my thoughts, but sometimes I'm either too tired, but most of the time, too lazy. Ha. TV is still my best friend. But I'll still try to write, perhaps at least whenever I return from my travels.
And till then. :)

17 days in paradise
17 days in a place I call home.
It was supposed to be a much deserved break, but I left for the Philippines with a heavy heart. Things happened at work, which made me felt that despite the fact that nothing is fair in this world, I deserve something better.
Things wasn't going smooth either for the children's workshops in the schools in the mountain areas. It took everybody by surprise when I had an emotional outburst one night. I have never cried so hard for the past 8 years in Bago City, and even if I had encountered problems, they would only hear occassional rantings from me. I guess it was an accummulation of all problems and the stress I was going through, that resulted in the outburst.
I never like sharing my problems with the whole world, but I am thankful that I have friends there who are always ready to lend me their ears. A hug, a pat on the shoulders, it's comforting.
After this experience, I'm giving second (or maybe more) thoughts on working with groups again.
I had 1 week to unwind from all the stress and problems, I gave enough quiet moments to myself, and spent time with friends. I went out to the sea, swam with the fish and corals, and watched the sunsets. We even spotted a blue dot stingray while snorkelling in Carbin Reef in Sagay. A few of the many reasons why I'm loving it there in the Philippines.

It's almost end of February??
I'm once again overwhelmed with work, the volunteer project in Bago City, and whatever not. It's back to the days of burying myself in piles of music scores, but this time round, it's together with the dictionary and all the Italian terms.
I felt I was mugging like a student once again. Ha.
The stress level must be on its way to hit the sky, unfortunately. I've been drowning myself with more coffee (I wish for free Starbucks everyday, including on weekends), sighing and ranting more often. I lose my temper much more easily, and I yearn to reach out to my inner peace at the end of the day, late at night. And after that I get insomnia, and couldn't wake up in the morning. A very bad vicious cycle.
If only there were 48 hours in a day.
One thing to keep me sane though, it's Korean pop songs. Ah, I know you are going to say that I'm intoxicated again with K-pop. Haa. I just went on a K-drama soundtracks and CDs shopping spree online a few weeks back. Oops. Haha. And recently I've been high on the songs by FT Island and CN Blue. I'm amazed by Lee Hongki of FT Island, he always sings with so much emotions, even if he has to sing them every few days when they go around promoting the songs on the various K-pop music charts.
These 2 songs by FT Island have been on constant replays on my player. Good songs linger in my mind. And I'm sharing the good songs. :)

Entering 2012
2012 has crept in, much to my reluctance. The past 365 days had gone too soon, and honestly speaking, I really can't recall any significant events that took place for the past year. Except for the fact that I flew back to the Philippines 4 times in a year. Ha.
And the date with Piolo. :D
The trip back to Malaysia for the Qing Ming Festival was worth cherishing, it has been quite a long while since I met my relatives there, and I never knew that I have step-aunts, not to mention seeing them and hearing the exciting stories of their days in the jungles during the communist war.
Interestingly, the intoxication from Korean dramas has its unexpectedly lasting effect on me. Haha.
Of course, as time passes, people come and go. I enjoyed all the get-togethers with old classmates, and I am thankful for the company of friends dearest to me. I will miss the ones who left for a better place, and will try to look on the bright side, for people who chose to walk out of my life.
With the new year already trickling in and away, I just wish for peace and happiness, with lots of good company with friends. :) No new year resolutions for me, because I don't want to stress myself, and most probably I won't be able to keep to them. Haha.
Hope 2012 will be an awesome year for all of us!

Back from Manila
It was as though I was dreaming. After 2 weeks of mad rush over work, I flew to Manila immediately right after I completed all my missions (for now), and back again to reality 4 days after.
I guess I was really exhausted over the past 2 weeks, I slept like a dead log over there in Manila. I did not bother to take any pictures too, I should have left my camera here.
But it was great seeing my friends there, both from Manila and Bago City. :) It was more like an early Christmas get-together with my friends, which I enjoyed it that way. Haha. Not to mention it was also a meaningful meet-up, to discuss the upcoming volunteering project in April. I'm very excited about that. :)
As usual, I love the shopping. Glorietta, Greenbelt and SM Mall of Asia are my playgrounds. :) Watched a pinoy movie too!
And oh! I took the MRT in Manila, ALONE. Haha. It can't be compared to the train system here in Singapore, but of course it was a kind of an experience for me. And I survived that. Haha.
I would still love to spend the Christmas in the Philippines, but air tickets are super expensive during the festive season, and work doesn't permit either. Maybe there would be a miracle, since my horoscope reading says that I would be travelling on Dec 3 - 4 and Dec 23. HAHA.
Yes I can never get enough of the Philippines. I'm already a pinoy at heart. :)

The Youth Choir
I've been following the Korean variety show 'Qualifications of Men' lately, intrigued by the latest mission on the show.
The mission was to form a 'Youth Choir', with members aged 52 and above, and to take part in the national choir competition. Auditions were held, and 40 senior citizens, with the oldest being 84, were selected.
Their journey in the past 3 months was a testimony to the growth of the choir. With an average age of 62, it was not easy for them to develop into a mature choir from scratch, let alone tackle the challenges of competing in a competition. I admire their courage and preseverence. Each of them has their own story to tell, and everybody has become well-loved by the viewers. Even the conductor Kim Tae-won, who is a band player, had to humbly learn conducting from another master in order to take up this challenge. He single-handedly did the composition and the arrangement for the 2 competition pieces.
I love the concept of the 'Youth Choir', it's never too old to sing on stage again, and to show to the young ones, that the seniors citizens can do it too. Totally love the idea of the K-pop idol medley, which they sang for the final round of the competition.
And with that, I'll leave you to enjoy their performance for the competition. :)

Went to Manila, and back again!
Before I knew it, I was in Manila, and back again. :(
Time flew too fast, 4 days in the Philippines is definitely not enough. There are just so many things I want to do, I could do. Very tempted to fly back there again, immediately. Ha.
But anyway, this time round, it was a different kind of fun, because I was like a Singaporean working as a tour guide in the Philippines. :)
Right after we landed in Manila at 5am, we went to the hotel, had breakfast at the nearby MacDonalds and to tap on the free wifi, to plan our itinerary.
We were glad that we went to the Legazpi Sunday Market nearby. It was so colourful and there were so many interesting stuff there.
From accessories..

To handphone covers..

To toys..

To interesting stuff like paperweight..

To food..

Love how the photos turn out. :)
We had lunch at Dampa, and they were amazed by the cheap and good seafood there. You buy your seafood from the market, and bring it to the restaurant nearby and ask them to cook it the way you want it to. I hardly get disappointed whenever I get to eat there. :)

Thanks to Imee, we had a free tour around Fort Santiago, a defense fortress in the old city of Intramuros. The guide was an interesting fella, though there were quite a few times I couldn't catch what he was saying. Too deep. Ha. At least now I know more about the Philippines' history, and gained some insight while going around the Prison House of the Philippine hero Jose Rizal.

But I think we were more concerned about our wet feet after walking through the tour in the rain.

Our itinerary for the second day was to trek up the Taal Volcano Island. My Ate (sister) Shelyn was very nice, she accompanied us there and hired a driver for the journey. It was about 1.5hr drive from Manila to Tagaytay, where we took the bangka across the lake to the Taal Volcano Island.

When we reached there, overly-friendly guides and horses were waiting for us, hoping we would pay them for the horses to bring us up to the top of the volcano. We decided from the start that we would trek up, since we were already in proper shoes. But they still followed us, trying to convince us to take the horses because we looked like 'we couldn't make it'. Of course, they gave up when we were halfway up the volcano. Haha.

Even if it was physically exhausting to trek up under the hot sun, I am glad we chose to walk, to enjoy the beautiful scenery that greeted us along the way.

Other tourists must be thinking, these people must be mad, not to take the horses. Haha.

It took us around 1 hour to reach the top, and the view was gorgeous. A crater lake in a volcano within a lake. :)

We stayed up there for around 15 minutes, and it took us just 20 minutes to get back to the foot of the volcano. The power of gravity. Haha.

Lunch was exceptionally satisfying after the climb. The pinoy food wasn't bad, anyway. :)

We went on to Sonja's Garden, everything's pretty with the plants and whatever.

We even had a competition among the smartphones, to see which is smarter in taking photos. The result? iPhone won. :)

While traveling back to Manila, they went crazy over the outlet shops at Greenfields.
Dinner was at Via Mare in Greenbelt. Love the bangus (stuff milkfish) and the eggplant with eggs.

I realised I had lots of coffee in Manila, not just because it's cheaper, there are more cafes, more choices. :)

The next 2 days were mainly about shopping. We became the shopping queens and king at SM Mall of Asia, and I've instantly brushed up on my Tagalog while bargaining at the Divisoria 168 Mall.
Ate Shel treated us to dinner at Barbara's, which came with a cultural performance too. Dancers performed various traditional Filipino dances to the tunes of the rondalla.

Yup, before we could say 'hello', it was time to say 'goodbye'. I didn't even get to shop in my favourite Glorietta and Greenbelt! I guess I still miss the moments of travelling alone, but I don't mind having the company too. :) At least there were more fun and laughter, when they were not performing their SOP, i.e. sleeping in the car. Haha.
I really, really can't wait to be back in the Philippines again. Shucks, my compulsive air-ticket-purchasing disorder is acting up again.

A date with Papa Piolo
Many of my Filipino friends would be happy for me. No, I'm not getting married to a Filipino (still contented with my freedom), neither am I migrating to the Philippines. Haha.
But I finally got to meet my idol, the Philippines' ultimate heartthrob, Piolo Pascual!! :D
Yes most of my Filipino friends know that I'm a fan of Piolo, and they like to make fun of me for that. Haha. Come to think of it, I started learning Tagalog after watching my first Tagalog movie, 'Don't Give Up On Us'. The main leads are none other than Piolo himself, and Judy Ann Santos. So I should thank him that I can now understand and speak simple Tagalog. :)
He was in Singapore last Sunday for his Asian tour album's launch, and I knew about it some time in August. I was actually procrastinating about it, because I didn't want to go alone, and my Filipino friends here in Singapore are working on weekends as well. But I was glad I got to go to his concert afterall.
The opening act was by a Filipino band, and once again they proved that Filipinos are indeed talented in music.
Then comes the guest performer, the rockstar princess Yeng Constantino. True to her name, I've never seen any other female singers who could carry off and sing rock songs as good as her. She writes her own songs too. 'Hawak Kamay' and 'Salamat' are the hits that you will hear, and you must hear in any of her concerts or performances.
And with much ado, Piolo finally came out to the delight of many screaming (or perhaps shrieking) fans. That includes me. Haha. With that good-looking face and well-toned body (oh.. drools at that chest!), who won't go crazy over him? Hahaha.
Belting out songs like 'Babe', 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' and 'Be My Lady', he melted my heart many times. Haha.
Sadly, he only sang for about 30 minutes, and that was the end of his concert. Would love to hear him sing more songs. He didn't even sing some of his major hits like 'Kailangan Kita'. Then again, this was for his 'Songs of the Decades' album launch.
After the concert, there was a meet-and-greet session. It was in chaos. Ha. We had to purchase the merchandise, which included the album and a poster, in order to get into the meet-and-greet session. And disappointingly, personal cameras were not allowed and we could only take photos with Piolo in groups of five.
And I couldn't share any photos of the meet-and-greet session, because the organiser screwed up and had not uploaded all the photos. Very disappointed and annoyed.
Oh well, at least, after 5 years of waiting, I finally got to come up close with my Papa P, and got his autographs too. :) Despite so, I shall continue to plead with the mayor and Tricia to get Piolo to perform during Bago City's fiesta. Haha. I will fly to Bago City at all costs. Wahaha.
Love you, Papa P!! :D
